Health IT and exchange

Interoperability

Interoperability is the ability of a system to exchange electronic health information with other systems and use the information it receives.

Why it matters in practice

Exchange is only part of the idea: the receiving system also needs to interpret and use the information. Standards can help, but real-world interoperability depends on implementation, permissions, and workflow.

Example

Illustrative example: a clinic receives a structured care summary and can review its information in the intended workflow without manually retyping every field.
