Health IT and exchange

HL7 V2 messaging

HL7 Version 2 (V2) is a messaging standard for exchanging healthcare data between systems.

Why it matters in practice

V2 messages commonly move information between clinical and administrative systems. A specific connection still depends on the message types, fields, local configuration, and the systems at each end.

Example

Illustrative example: a hospital system sends a structured admission or lab message to another system configured to receive that message type.
