Health IT and exchange

FHIR

FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is an HL7 specification for exchanging healthcare information using defined resources and implementation approaches.

Why it matters in practice

FHIR describes common ways to represent and exchange healthcare data. A system's actual exchange capabilities depend on the FHIR version, profiles, implementation guides, security setup, and which resources or operations it supports.

Example

Illustrative example: two systems that both support a compatible FHIR interface may exchange a defined resource, provided their implementations and permissions line up.
