Health information exchange (HIE)
Health information exchange (HIE) is the electronic sharing of health information between healthcare participants or organizations.
Why it matters in practice
HIE can describe the exchange activity, the services that support it, or an organization that facilitates exchange. ONC describes different approaches, including directed exchange and query-based exchange.
Example
Illustrative example: a referring clinician sends relevant information to a known specialist, or an authorized clinician queries another source for available records.
