Health IT and exchange

Direct secure messaging

Direct secure messaging is a standards-based method for healthcare participants to send health information to one another through a trusted network.

Why it matters in practice

It can support directed exchange between a known sender and recipient. A Direct address may look like an email address, but it is different from an ordinary email account; the recipient and supported service need to be confirmed.

Example

Illustrative example: a clinic sends a referral summary to a specialist's verified Direct address using a system configured for Direct exchange.
