Natural language processing (NLP)

Natural language processing (NLP) is the field of using computational methods to analyze or transform language used by people.

Why it matters in practice

NLP can work with written or spoken language. In healthcare documents, language and context can be ambiguous, so an NLP result may need validation before it is used in a record or workflow.

Example

Illustrative example: software identifies a date or a named document section in a text passage so a person or another system can review it.
