Optical character recognition (OCR)

Optical character recognition (OCR) is the process of converting visible characters in an image or scan into machine-readable text.

Why it matters in practice

OCR can make printed text searchable or available for later processing. Image quality, handwriting, layout, and unusual fonts can affect what is recognized.

Example

Illustrative example: a scanned printed referral is converted into text that a staff member can review and compare with the original image.
