Referrals

Referral intake

Referral intake is the initial receipt and review of a request for specialty care and the information sent with it.

Why it matters in practice

An intake process may identify the requested service, the referring and receiving organizations, and information that needs follow-up. Each practice defines its own required fields, routing, and review responsibilities.

Example

Illustrative example: a specialty office receives a referral request, records where it came from, and sends it to the appropriate intake queue for review.
